The New Neighbor Program builds bridges of understanding, learning and friendship between peoples of different cultures.
The program helps refugees arriving in our community. Refugees flee their homelands because of persecution and terror. They leave everything behind -- friends, family and possessions. Refugees are invited by our government to begin a new life in the U.S.
They need:
- Practice speaking English
- Information about life in the U.S.
- Friends to help them adjust
New Neighbor volunteers reach out to Refugees by:
- Meeting once a week for three months with a refugee partner
- Answering questions about life in the U.S.
- Spending time together.
New Neighbor volunteers need a love of people, a desire to help and a sense of humor. Volunteers do not need to speak a foreign language or have travel experience.
Joining the New Neighbor Program is Easy:
- Contact the Exodus office for application forms and schedule an interview
- Attend a four hour training session
- Visit a refugee in his/her home once a week for three months
Exodus Provides Everything You Need to Have a Great Experience:
- Easy-to-use training manual
- Training session on how to communicate cross-culturally
- Introduction to a refugee who wants your help
- Ongoing support including answers to questions, ideas for your weekly meetings, and other help.
The New Neighbor Program is an opportunity to learn about another country and see the United States in a fresh new way. Most importantly, you will make a difference in the life of a refugee. Volunteer today!
