Looking for a new way to introduce multicultural activities and develop an understanding of the many blessings we have in the United States? Consider the possibilities of in-classroom learning combined with a hands-on service project! Refugee studies can be combined with a Welcome to America! pack to give life to what your students are learning. The following agencies offer curriculum guides for use in the classroom. Many of the guides offer complete lesson plans, most are free.
UNHCR "For Teachers" This free comprehensive teacher's guide provides full lesson plans in six subject areas (Art, History, Human Rights, Geography, Civic Education, Language, and Literature) for three age groups 9-11 year-olds, 12-14 year olds, and 15-18 year olds. Lesson plans and are many of the resources can be downloaded.
A Refugee Camp in The Heart of The City
Developed by Doctors Without Borders, this eight part curriculumon refugee issues is geared toward middle and high school students. The goal is to acquaint students with some of the complexities of refugee/internally displaced persons camp. Download able for free in html or Adobe Acrobat format.
