Current Situation In The Sudan
The United Nations declaration of genocide in the Darfur legally obligates the UN nation states to act to bring an end to the ethnic cleansing. Unfortunately, the international response has been sluggish. The UN's non-responsiveness is linked to a problem with funding. Meanwhile, 90 percent of African villages in Darfur have been destroyed, displacing hundreds of thousands. Refugee camps housing the displaced in neighboring counties are overcrowded, unsanitary, insufficient in their supply of food, water, and health care, and hot beds for curable disease that go untreated. Mortality is high, particularly among women and children. Aid is desperately needed to control the genocidal government of Sudan and protect the dying civilian population of Darfur.
Two congressional bills address the dire situation - HR3127 and S1462 (both summarized at savedarfur.org). Advocacy groups across the nation are currently pushing for revisions to H.R. 3127 and S.1462 to include additional humanitarian aid and peacekeeping efforts.
