The New Neighbor Citizenship program is similar to the New Neighbor Program, with the specific focus of helping a refugee or immigrant prepare for the naturalization test. New Neighbor Citizenship FAQ
Program Description: The New Neighbor Citizenship program helps refugees and immigrants in our community who want to become citizens of the United States.
Citizenship applicants:
- are eager to demonstrate their loyalty to the U.S. and to gain the rights and responsibilities of citizenship in their new home land, including the right to vote and the right to petition for family members to enter the country.
- have lived and worked in the United States for at least five years as permanent residents
- come from many different countries.
- must demonstrate English language skills and knowledge of U.S. history and civics in an interview with the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS).
New Neighbor Citizenship volunteers:
- reach out to citizenship applicants by meeting with them once a week for four months.
- help their citizenship partners practice written and oral English and review U.S. history and civics information using materials provided by Exodus.
- provide encouragement and build the self-confidence of their partners.
Becoming a volunteer is easy and rewarding!
